Material card 2 - Perspex


Poly(methyl methacrylate), developed in the early 1900’s is a lightweight transparent thermoplastic.  It is a low cost, easy handling material that is often used as an alternative to glass.  An acrylic, Poly(methyl methacrylate) is also known as Perspex and Lucite. 

It has the potential to be engraved – both through laser and manual engraving.

Applications –
A commercial and domestic substitute for transparent glass, that can be used both internally and externally.  (Opaque Perspex is also available)    

Types/ Sizes –
Custom sizes and colours available – Transparent and opaque  

Limitations –
- Brittle when applied in load situations (impact force)
- Prone to scratching (compared to conventional glass)
